What is GanMed Biotechnical?

GanMed Biotechnical was founded by Dr. Chet Doan in 1989. A graduate of Johns Hopkins University with a PhD in genetics from MIT, Dr. Doan envisioned GanMed as a facility that would perform research into gene therapy for use in treating human illness.

Within three years, GanMed had scored several major victories, including being the first company to manufacture, on a large scale, monoclonal antibodies that the human body would not attack as foreign (see our "About Monoclonal Antibodies" page for an explanation of this exciting technology). Research into recombinant DNA resulted in ChemaCyte, a novel leukemia treatment that became GanMed's first billion dollar product sale.

GanMed is now perched on the leading edge of gene therapy and, armed with the human genome map, will continue to make scientific breakthroughs far into the 21st century.

Why Haven't I Heard of GanMed Before?

Simple. GanMed is not a direct marketing company. Our main focus is research and development of novel biotechnology and new drug delivery methods.

When GanMed has finished its research and development phases on a product and has received government approval for that product, it is then marketed to pharmaceutical companies. We feel that, by selling our product lines to pharmaceutical companies, we can assure that the product will be marketed to the health care industry in a timely and proper manner.

A second benefit of our "middle man" sales policy is that it allows us to keep our marketing and legal departments small. The cost savings to GanMed allows us to spend more on research and less on overhead.

Some of the names you may have heard include: ChemaCyte, a leukemia treatment marketed by Sedgwick Pharma.

Dermatia, a novel dermal drug delivery system, marketed by LunaPharma.

Vesaflu, our rDNA cold cure, also marketed by LunaPharma.

Zeogena, useful in prenatally diagnosed Down's syndrome, marketed by C. F. Jorgen and Company.
