Dinner!

As I sit here, staring out the window wondering what on earth to write about, my mind wanders to my weekend. 13 of us from college all got together, it had been years for some of us. We’ve all moved on to bigger and better things. We’ve grown, matured, changed. While we had a blast, there were some struggles. We used to know exactly what to do and when. We were all on the same wavelength. That is no longer the case. For example, trying to get 13 people to decide on dinner is nearly impossible. Yet decision needed to be made or we’d all go hungry.

Group A: Mexican. There’s a little Mexican restaurant just down the street. The food is fair but the margaritas are incredible. Great atmosphere! A bit dark and mysterious, which is always fun. But you know Mexican, it doesn’t always sit just right and the margaritas can leave you with a nasty headache if you aren’t careful. Yet, there’s just something about this place…you don’t quite trust it, but it never really goes wrong. The hangovers are your own fault anyway.

Group B: The Spectadium. Yes, it’s a sports bar, but they have the best wings and just good ol' bar food. Sometimes the splurge is worth it. Especially if there’s a good game on and the guys are there in droves (ok, so we like to look…). Unfortunately, they don’t know much other than bar food. As good as it is, that’s all they really know. It’s not like one of us could order a salad if we so chose and forget anything more complex! So, would we be able to get what we wanted or would we all walk away knowing that we made a decision just to make it?

Group C: The new place down the street. It just opened. Not a one of us had been there. Rumor has it that the food is good, the chef knows what he’s doing, and his presentation is flawless. Or so they say. It had only opened a week or so ago. Everything was new and the bugs were being worked out. Yet, we knew we’d walk away with our bellies full.

Group D: American. You know those national chains…oversized portions to match there oversized price. You could go to any city and find yourselves sitting in the same booth, with the same server, ordering the same food, getting the same drink, having the same conversation, leaving with the same excitement level as when you went in. It sounds boring, but it’s safe. You know what to expect. You know what will happen. Is there anything wrong with that?

It’s amazing how difficult the decision was. Four relatively simple choices, each with their merits, yet, each has a downside. Thirteen smart grrls, thirteen opinions, thirteen minds that needed to come as one. Oh, what a night!
